LG Electronics and Marriott International have agreed to collaborate on a cloud-based guest room entertainment and technology platform for hotels. The system is being introduced through a 40-hotel pilot in the US and Canada.

The agreement focuses on a platform for Marriott's participating hotels that combines smart hotel televisions with cloud-based management tools. Marriott plans to adopt the jointly developed system across participating properties, with a broader international rollout planned across participating brands.

Under the arrangement, LG will provide cloud platform development, device management and technical support for hotel operations. Marriott will contribute guest experience design, hotel operations expertise and technology infrastructure to define how the system is used across its estate.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding at Marriott's global headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, building on an existing relationship in hotel televisions and hospitality technology.

Room systems

The platform is intended to bring entertainment, hotel information and room functions into a single in-room system, rather than treating the television as a standalone screen. The approach is designed to link guest services and hotel operations more closely through connected devices.

For hotel operators, the system offers central oversight of in-room technology at multiple levels of the business. Marriott teams will be able to monitor the health, performance and status of televisions and related devices in individual rooms, across a single property, by brand grouping or across a wider hotel portfolio.

The central management structure is also intended to make software and content updates easier and speed up fault identification. It also reduces dependence on traditional on-site video distribution infrastructure by enabling authentication and management of LG smart hotel televisions and set-top boxes through cloud-based tools.

A key part of the offer is the in-room entertainment package. The companies said it supports linear television, streaming services and free ad-supported television channels, including more than 40 over-the-top applications and 250 channels.

The television service will also include personalised advertising through LG Channels and client-side ad insertion. Neither company disclosed financial terms for the collaboration.

Wider strategy

The partnership reflects a broader shift in the hotel sector towards treating guest room technology as part of an integrated operating system rather than a collection of separate devices. Hotels have increasingly sought to connect entertainment, room controls and support systems while giving central teams greater visibility over maintenance and software management.

For LG, the deal adds to its push in hospitality displays and related software services. The company said the project expands the role of the hotel television into a hub for content, services and property management.

"Through our strategic collaboration with Marriott, LG is expanding the role of the hotel TV beyond entertainment to become a central platform that connects guests with personalized content and services while helping hotel operators manage their properties more efficiently," said Nicolas Min, Head of the Information Display Business at the LG Media Entertainment Solution Company.

"By combining our leadership in hospitality displays with cloud, webOS and device management technologies, we will continue to deliver innovative solutions that help shape the future of smart hotels," Min said.

Marriott described the arrangement as part of its effort to update guest-facing technology across its hotel network while simplifying operations for staff. The work combines LG's connected-device systems with Marriott's own technology platform and hospitality operations.

"Our collaboration with LG reflects Marriott's commitment to building technology that elevates the guest experience across our portfolio," said Drew Pinto, Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue and Technology Officer at Marriott International.

"By combining LG's connected-device capabilities with Marriott's hospitality expertise and enterprise platform, we are creating a more seamless, personalized guest room experience while helping hotel teams operate more efficiently. This work is an important step toward building a smarter technology ecosystem that evolves alongside the needs of our guests," Pinto said.

The initial pilot covers 40 locations across the United States and Canada. The companies also plan to examine how connected digital services and central management tools could be extended beyond guest rooms into public and shared areas of hotels.
