T-Mobile & Red Hat align to modernise telco cloud

Thu, 20th Feb 2025

Red Hat has announced a collaboration with T-Mobile, utilising Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus to enhance T-Mobile's common telco cloud capabilities.

This collaboration aims to improve T-Mobile's automation, scalability, and operational efficiency. By standardising infrastructure and automating workflow, T-Mobile expects to accelerate the time-to-market for new services while optimising costs. Red Hat's platform will help T-Mobile support cloud-native 5G applications and explore opportunities in edge computing, private networks, and IoT.

Telecommunications service providers seek cloud flexibility and cost reduction to unlock financial resources for new investments. Through Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus, T-Mobile can implement a common telco cloud that consolidates and standardises infrastructure to maintain low costs. This includes complete automation for enhanced operational efficiency.

Standardised training, support, compliance, and security capabilities across different workloads will assist T-Mobile in reducing risk and complexity in managing its telecom workloads. The implementation will also expedite time-to-market for new services through simple certification, pre-validation, and lifecycle management processes.

Furthermore, the partnership is expected to enhance scalability and flexibility in hybrid multi-cloud environments, enabling more reliable, carrier-grade services tailored to the needs of telecommunication service providers.

Fran Heeran, Vice President of Global Telecommunications at Red Hat, stated, "As telecommunications service providers face increasing demands for cloud flexibility, consistency and cost optimisation, Red Hat OpenShift provides a standardised, scalable foundation to drive efficiency and innovation. By collaborating with T-Mobile to power its common telco cloud, Red Hat will help unlock new opportunities for streamlined operations, faster service delivery and a simplified approach to managing diverse workloads across the core network."

"Together, we're enabling a flexible, carrier-grade platform that not only meets today's needs but lays the groundwork for tomorrow's advancements."

The partnership will integrate a robust partner ecosystem, providing a unified, standards-based environment for more efficient development, testing, and deployment. This collaboration is expected to foster innovation by simplifying workload integration, expediting certification processes, expanding market opportunities, and enhancing alignment with telecom operators' requirements.

The Red Hat partner ecosystem will enable telecommunication service providers to interact more efficiently with various open-source technologies and communities. It will also provide a direct pipeline for requests and feedback, further enhancing collaborative efforts.

Lori Ames, SVP of Cloud, IP & Transport Technology at T-Mobile, commented, "T-Mobile's multipurpose cloud will bridge us from a traditional telco to a dynamic techco, exposing previously untapped innovation while enhancing operational efficiencies. By partnering with best-in-class providers like Red Hat to leverage cloud-native agility, automation and AI-driven insights, we're redefining connectivity for the digital economy by meeting our customers where they need us."
