UpLift sends 3,237 messages to Moon on rover mission

UpLift Aerospace and SPhotonix have partnered to send more than 3,200 human messages to the Moon aboard Astrolab's FLIP rover. The messages will be stored in a 5D Memory Crystal and carried as part of Astrobotic's Griffin Mission One.

The payload contains 3,237 messages collected by UpLift from students, teachers, community members and a small group of leaders. The companies say the material is intended to create a record of contemporary human life that will remain on the lunar surface.

The crystal was integrated onto Astrolab's rover in February alongside a mission patch and artwork designed by Dr Sian Proctor, a geoscientist, astronaut, artist and author. The mission patch is described as among the first to return to the Moon since the Apollo era.

SPhotonix said the circular crystal measures 2.5cm in diameter and 2mm thick, with storage capacity of up to 8GB of text and imagery. Made from fused quartz glass, it is designed to withstand launch conditions, fire and temperatures of up to 1000C.

Storage method

SPhotonix uses what it calls 5D Memory Crystal storage, a form of optical data storage that records digital information through structural changes in silica glass. The process relies on laser writing inside the material rather than conventional magnetic or semiconductor storage.

The company traces the research behind the technology to more than three decades of work led by Professor Peter Kazansky at the University of Southampton. The approach is aimed at very long-term preservation, particularly where durability is a central requirement.

That focus has led SPhotonix to work on several archival projects, including storing the human genome, Wikipedia and digital material linked to games and art. It has also been involved in earlier space-related missions, reflecting growing interest in permanent or near-permanent storage beyond Earth.

Education focus

For UpLift, the project is tied to its work in education, research and workforce development. Including messages from students and educators is intended to connect public participation with lunar exploration.

"By sending student and community messages to the Moon, we're creating a lasting snapshot of humanity's hopes, ideas and perspectives. For the rest of their lives, these students will be able to look at the Moon and know their projects and messages are physically there. Inspiring a generation to engage in a new age of space exploration," said Josh Hanes, chief executive officer of UpLift Aerospace.

Astrolab, which is supplying the rover, framed the mission as part of a broader effort to combine transport systems on the Moon with other uses, including carrying cultural and archival material. Its FLIP rover is travelling on Griffin Mission One with a mix of payloads.

"This collaboration brings together education, advanced data storage and lunar mobility. By bringing together partners like UpLift and SPhotonix, we're showing how lunar infrastructure can support exploration, along with the preservation of human legacy beyond our planet," said Jaret Matthews, chief executive officer and founder of Astrolab.

Space archive

The project also highlights a niche but expanding market for sending archives, artworks and symbolic objects into space. Companies in launch, robotics and data preservation have increasingly sought to package scientific, educational and cultural material into lunar and orbital missions.

SPhotonix said the crystal and the other items carried with it are expected to remain on the Moon once delivered. The company argues that fused quartz glass offers a stable medium for this kind of archive because it resists chemical and thermal stress.

Its executives say that resilience is central to the rationale for using the technology in space. They also argue that the use case extends beyond hardware survival to the broader question of preserving records of human activity over very long timescales.
