US airlines expect ADS-B In fleetwide within five years

US airline professionals expect ADS-B In to be installed across their fleets within five years, according to research from Acron Aviation, pointing to growing industry preparation ahead of a possible federal mandate.

A poll of 100 US airline management professionals found that 86% believe their airline will have the technology fleetwide within that period. It also found that 70% think the industry is moving too slowly on adoption given the safety case.

ADS-B In is the receiving side of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system already fitted to commercial aircraft. It gives pilots a view of surrounding traffic based on GPS data and supports applications such as Cockpit Display of Traffic Information Assisted Visual Separation and Interval Management.

The findings come as lawmakers consider rival aviation safety measures that could require ADS-B In on most aircraft by the end of 2031. Under that timetable, the research suggests airlines that have not begun internal reviews may face a narrow window to assess, approve and complete fleet installation.

Acron found that the average time from initial evaluation to board approval for an ADS-B In investment is 9.2 months. Once a mandate is in place, respondents put the average realistic compliance timeline at 1.8 years, bringing the total process to about three years from first evaluation to fleetwide compliance.

That timeline has sharpened concerns about delay. Nearly one in five respondents, or 18%, said the US National Airspace System is already struggling or failing to keep pace with rising air traffic demand.

Safety and timing

Safety remains a central factor in airline thinking. The research found that 88% of respondents believe ADS-B In will make a significant contribution to reducing mid-air collision risk over the medium term.

Operational considerations also featured in the survey. Three-quarters of respondents, or 74%, said FAA infrastructure support, including air traffic control systems that can identify which aircraft are ADS-B In-capable, is a significant factor in their investment decision.

The report also highlighted what airlines want from suppliers. More than a third, or 37%, cited a proven track record and FAA-certified technology as a top-three factor when choosing a provider, while 22% pointed to involvement in FAA trials and regulatory programmes.

FAA operational testing has already offered a measure of the technology's effects. An evaluation at Dallas-Fort Worth involving American Airlines recorded an average 12-second reduction in arrival spacing, four to five additional landings per hour per runway, and 490,000lbs of fuel saved in the first year.

Those results help explain why many airlines appear to be preparing for adoption before any rule is finalised. While the survey reflects expectations rather than confirmed procurement plans, it suggests a broad assumption within the sector that regulation is likely.

The current debate in Washington has added urgency. Competing aviation safety bills under consideration in Congress would each be expected to push the industry towards mandated equipage, increasing timetable pressure on operators with large fleets and lengthy approval processes.

Some executives see timing as the main message of the research. "The timeline math is straightforward. If it takes almost a year to reach a board decision and approaching two more to equip a fleet, airlines that are not in evaluation now are going to find 2031 arrives faster than expected," said Damien Moreau, President, ACSS, Acron Aviation.

Acron's ACSS business makes avionics systems including ADS-B products, traffic collision avoidance systems and terrain awareness systems. ACSS is a joint venture between Acron Aviation and Thales.

The survey covered management-level staff in airline operations, safety, fleet and avionics roles across US-based commercial, business aviation and cargo airlines. Censuswide conducted it online.

For those respondents, the issue appears to extend beyond regulatory compliance alone. "Aviation professionals know that ADS-B In delivers both safety and operational benefits and these are proven through the FAA trials. The industry knows this, and the airlines moving first will be in the strongest position when the mandate lands," said Morast.
